When I started playing around with the paleo diet, I wasn’t expecting to become “crossfit obsessed”, but it appeared that paleo and crossfit went hand in hand. Since I hadn’t really been having much success with any fitness routine, I decided to do some research on this crazy thing of crossfit.
Now remember, this is real life. I’m about 50 lbs overweight. I have had 3 kids in 3 years. I’m not in shape.
Everything I read and saw said it was good for beginners, it could be scaled (basically the moves could be made easier). However, I couldn’t figure out how to get started without joining a box (crossfit lingo for gym).
Initially, I signed up for Crossfit Ignite Sydney’s starter email and used their videos to get me started. It was a great starting point!!! That’s then when I started adapting Tabata to continue to challenge myself more.
Here in the last few weeks, I’m actually doing the WODs (workout of the day) from Crossfit.com. They are posted every evening for the next day. My favorite part is that there is a link to a video showing the WOD right in the daily blogpost. From there I go to BrandX for scaling. (I’ve been honestly using the “buttercup” scaling- going down to 3 lb dumb bells to start some of these). The coolest thing I’m finding about crossfit is that you can pretty much google whatever the movement is and find videos or scaling recommendations. I even bought a mop for $1.24 at the walmarts (the mop head screws off) to use for practicing my form on bar bell exercises.
I mentioned last week the timer app I had bought for my iphone…well I also use the free iwod app (which links to videos and what the lingo/exercises all mean) and I bookmark the BrandX scaling so I can easily do this all from my phone!!!
I think between the tabata, the brandX scaling and some other resources I’ve found on pinterest, it would be very easy for someone to start trying a basic crossfit workout.
I’ve got lots of pins on my wellness board on pinterest- feel free to take a look…but here are some of my favorites:

I’m linking this post up to my girls over at:

I am convinced that this out of shape momma is going to get stronger and healthier every day!! What do you think? Is crossfit something you would like to try? Do you have any specific questions? Email me or post a comment…believe me, I’m learning right along with you!!!
Disclaimer: I am not a fitness professional, just a mom trying to get healthy. Always consult a doctor before starting a new fitness routine…but for Pete’s sake…let’s just get active. Also- there are no affiliate links in this post- just sharing what is working for me in the hopes it can encourage someone else!! I have also bought a groupon for a local crossfit box but haven’t been yet. I’m still hoping to just refine my skills and learn technique so I can save money and continue at home…but I’ll keep you udpated!! Keep an eye out for deals like this on groupon or social living!!!! I got a great deal!!

I love the idea of cross-fit, but I didn’t want to spend the money on a gym either. I will definitely be looking into some of the things you linked, and I always read your posts. I’m actually starting Power90 (the intro to P90X, basically) today though. I’m also fascinated with kettlebells, but haven’t ever tried them. This is going to be an exciting season for us, I think!
Awesome! I’m gonna keep rolling out more resources as I find them!! So glad you’re writing for the cma rotation too! We got this girl!!!
